Self-care is very important for everyone but especially for us wives and mothers! We constantly make sure everyone else is doing good and has what they need however we need to remember that we cannot pour from an empty cup. We must take care of ourselves as well.
Here is a list of ideas for you to boost your self-care routine so you can take care of those around you even better and without burning yourself out.
Read your Bible: Get deep into God's Word. His Word is refreshing to our souls and can help to give us the extra boost of hope and joy that we need to continue on.
Sleep: Sleep is critical to your health. We only have so many hours in a day, I know, but you need to prioritize getting some good rest in those hours.
Drink Herbal Teas: Instead of grabbing that coffee or soda, reach for a cup of tea whether iced or hot. There are so many herbal teas that can help your mind and body. Chamomile Tea: Known for its calming properties, chamomile tea may help with insomnia, anxiety, and digestion issues. It's often used as a bedtime tea to promote relaxation and improve sleep quality. Peppermint Tea: Peppermint tea is refreshing and can aid in digestion, alleviate bloating and gas, and relieve nausea. It may also help with headaches and sinus congestion due to its menthol content. Facials: You can go to the spa or just have a little spa day at home. Splurge on some good face wash, face mask, and moisturizer so you can give your face a refresh.
Read: Reading can take you out of your current reality and throw you into an escape. Reading can also open your mind and help you to love learning. There is a whole world of books out there in every variety you can think of. Some of my favorites are "Power of a Praying Wife" by Stormie Omartian, "The Love Dare", "How to Win Friends and Influence People", "Battlefield of the Mind" by Joyce Meyer, and more. I will do another post in the next coming weeks with a list of my favorite reads.
Hair Treatment: It's a daunting task especially when you have long thick hair but it will make you feel soooo good, I promise! Get yourself a good hair oil or hair mask with some yummy smelling shampoo and conditioner. Take a good chunk of time one night maybe before reading or watching a movie. First brush your hair fully then apply your favorite hair oil or hair mask. Then go read a book or watch a movie. After its been soaking in a while take shower and use some of your favorite shampoo and conditioner.
Grounding: This may not be a common thing for everyone but I love connecting with the Earth. Kick off those shoes and socks and go touch the grass and dirt. I'm not sure what it is about touching the ground but it instantly slows my mind down and gives me a peace.
Stop the Bad Habits: Do you have some bad habits that are running your life? Whether it is smoking, drinking, or even just biting your nails, make a conscious effort to stop them.
Work on Your Financial Health: Getting your finances in order can seriously help improve your life. The stress that bad financial decisions can bring over us can cripple us. Getting organized and getting your checkbook some breathing room with take a weight off your shoulders that will carry over to other areas of your life as well. I highly suggest reading Dave Ramsey's book on Financial Peace.
Exercise: A 5 minute brisk walk is all you need to get yourself a good start towards building an exercise routine. Exercise can release hormones that will lower stress and help you stay physically healthy too!
Journal: A great way to get out the frustrations of the day is to journal. You can journal on your phone, in a notebook, or even on a napkin. Shameless plug.... I did create a journal with lined pages and scriptures on each page, you can check it out here: https://a.co/d/hOvBAjQ
Learn to Love Learning: Growth is a great part of self-care. I believe one should never stop learning. There are always new areas of life to explore. There are also many ways to learn too! These days we don't only have books and school but we also have podcasts, YouTube, online courses, audiobooks, lectures available from some of the top colleges on places like ItunesU, and so much more.
Garden: Even if it is a tiny plant on your desk, watching and helping something to flourish with life brings most joy. Don't worry if you don't have a green thumb either, there are some plants that are near impossible to kill such as pothos plants. And if you do happen to kill it just grab another from your local store. Stick to the cheaper ones if you kill them often haha. Having plants inside your home can also help to clean the air in your home too!
Take a Relaxing Bath: Take an hour one night with the door shut and locked, candles lit, music playing, and even a fun fizzy bath bomb to help you unwind and put you in a state of relaxation like no other.
Read a Devotional or Bible Study: Just like reading your Bible, diving even deeper into scripture can help you to grow closer to God and grow in hope and peace.
Go Out For Coffee/Tea With a Friend: Fellowship with those we love is important. Make sure you are making time to build and nurture the relationships you have with those you love.
Get Outside: Take a trip to the beach or a hike through the woods to get some fresh air and time outside.
Be Kind to Yourself: Sometimes we can be our own biggest critic. I am personally super hard on myself when things aren't going perfect but over the years I have had to learn that no one is perfect and THAT IS OKAY! No one on this planet has achieved perfection and they won't.
Start Small and Build Good Habits: Start to develop things gradually to build your self-care routine and find what works best for you. For some it can be as simple as making sure to take a shower and brush their hair each day while others can jump in with a full skin care routine every morning and night.
Self-care is essential for maintaining our physical, mental, and emotional well-being in today's fast-paced world. It's a deliberate and conscious practice of nurturing ourselves, which enables us to recharge, refocus, and replenish our energy reserves. By prioritizing self-care, we acknowledge our own needs and take proactive steps to meet them, ultimately enhancing our overall quality of life. Self-care isn't selfish; it's a vital component of sustainable living and resilience. When we neglect self-care, we risk burnout, increased stress levels, and diminished productivity. However, when we make self-care a priority, we cultivate greater self-awareness, resilience, and a deeper connection with ourselves and others. Ultimately, self-care empowers us to show up as our best selves, both for ourselves and for those around us, enabling us to navigate life's challenges with greater ease and grace.
